The summer solstice is here, marking the longest day of the year and the official start of summer on Thursday.

While many of us greeted the start of summer on June 1, technically the season only officially begins with the solstice, according to Time magazine.

This is because meteorologists used weather patterns to divide the year up into four seasons, so while the summer solstice does not align with the calendar's first day of summer, it marks the official start of the warm season.

EarthSky noted that, during ancient times, people tracked the sun's path across the sky, and they observed a shift in the length of day and the location of sunrise and sunset.

They even built ancient monuments such as Stonehenge to follow the sun's yearly progress.

In the Northern Hemisphere, this solstice marks the longest day of the year but, while it is regarded as the official start of summer, days will now start to get shorter as the sun starts to rise later.

This all has to do with the Earth’s tilt on its axis and its motion in orbit around the sun, SkyNews said.

The summer solstice occurs when the North Pole reaches its maximum annual tilt toward the sun. As a result, most living within the continental U.S. will be seeing the sun for between 14 and 16 hours overhead while in the arctic the sun will remain overhead for 24 hours.

The summer solstice takes place annually, between June 20 and June 22, and this year it officially starts at 6:07 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, June 21, Time reported.
