Washington Redskins safety Su'a Cravens has been placed on the reserve/left squad list for the rest of the 2017-18 NFL season after he didn’t report back to the Redskins because of personal issues.

Cravens had announced over Labor Day weekend that he wanted to retire at age 22 because of personal family issues. Team officials met with Cravens and decided to place him on the exempt/left squad for four weeks to give him time to think about his path going forward.

As those four weeks ended, the decision to place Cravens on the Reserve/Left squad was made after further meetings with Cravens and his representatives could not convince Redskins officials that his personal and health issues had been resolved, The Washington Post reported.

Cravens also did not show up to support his teammates on Sunday as they played against the Los Angeles Rams, as he had been expected to do, the Post reported.

The Redskins are already lean in the safety position, with Deshazor Everett and fourth-round pick Montae Nicholson both injured and considered day-to-day.

Last season Cravens had 34 tackles, two pass deflections, an interception, and a sack. He didn’t play some games because of a concussion and a biceps injury.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden said the “retirement” decision was personal in nature and didn’t reflect Cravens’ love for the game.

“We sincerely hope that Su’a uses this time away from the club to reflect upon whether or not he’d like to resume his career in the National Football League in 2018,” the Redskins said in a statement, The Washington Times reported.

Cravens has said on social media that he didn’t feel the need to explain his reasons for walking away from the team.
