If recent history (and television) has taught us anything, it is that storage units can be real treasure troves. Over the years there have been many valuable items that have resurfaced after they were locked away and forgotten. From historic documents and letters to a vintage piano – dozens of rare and unique items have emerged, many of which have made their way onto a list compiled by Lovemoney.com.

Based on the report, we look at 8 of these valuable items that have been found in storage:

1. A rare snowboard that sold for $31,313. Two vintage Burton snowboards were uncovered by an eBay user after she opened up the dark and dusty storage unit she had rented in 2014. Not sure the exact worth of the items, she posted one of the boards for auction on eBay and wound up earning $31,313.

2. Historical documents worth $10,000. When an Arizona man paid $20 to rent an abandoned storage unit, he was not expecting to come across a collection of historical documents worth $10,000. The collection included letters from the 31st U.S. president Herbert Hoover as well as White House invitations from the 29th president Warren Harding.

3. A 1928 piano valued between $10,000 and $12,000. In an episode of "Storage Wars," Barry Weiss made a startling discovery. Locked away in the storage unit, which he bid $275 on, was a 1928 Marshall and Wendell piano estimated to be worth between $10,000 and $12,000.

4. Vintage video game valued at $50,000. "Storage Wars" has uncovered some real storage unit treasures in recent years, including classic video game hardware and cartridges valued at $50,000.

5. Newspaper articles of Elvis Presley worth $90,000. In 2010, an intriguing discovery was made. Forgotten inside a storage unit lay a collection of newspapers that were dated 17 August 1977 – the day after Elvis Presley died. The newspapers were valued at $90,000.

6. 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby that sold for $159,500. In 2016, a 1966 Ford Mustang was discovered forgotten in a Massachusetts storage unit. The vehicle sold at an auction in Connecticut for $159,500.

7. 1927 Harley-Davidson motorcycle that sold for $407,540. The Ford Mustang was not the only vintage vehicle to be discovered hidden in an abandoned storage unit. In 2015, a 1927 Harley-Davidson racer complete with a sidecar was discovered in Melbourne, Australia. The motorcycle was sold for $407,540.

8. Pirate chest filled with gold coins worth $500,000. It was like a movie scene unfolding in front of the eyes of Dan and Laura Dotson of "Storage Wars" fame when they unlocked a storage unit in 2011 and uncovered an antique pirate chest that was brimming with 16th-century Spanish pieces worth $500,000.
