Steven Seagal has been awarded Russian citizenship by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The action-movie star was awarded the citizenship on Thursday, according to USA Today. Seagal, 64, has visited the country a lot over the years, accompanying Putin, who’s a big fan of judo, to many martial-arts events.

Seagal, who is a Republican, has been vocal about his support of Putin in the past, calling him “one of the greatest world leaders.” He supported Putin in the 2014 annexation of Crimea, which earned the Russian president a great deal of backlash.

The actor told Russian newspaper, Rossiskaya Gazeta, that western policy on Crimea was “idiotic” and said Putin was acting to “protect the Russian-speaking people of Crimea, his assets, and the Russian Black Sea military base in Sevastopol,” USA Today noted.

“He cares more about Russia than anybody I know,” Seagal said at the time, according to The New York Daily News. “And he’s not afraid to get up and do what needs to be done.”

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the famous actor has been “asking quite insistently and over a lengthy period to be granted citizenship,” The Daily Mail noted.

“He is well known for his warm feelings towards our country and has never hidden them,” Peskov said.

According to Daily Mail, Seagal is not the first high-profile person to be granted Russian citizenship.

Citizenship was granted to veteran French actor Gerard Depardieu in 2013 after he became “a tax exile in ire over rate hikes in his native country.” Putin has also handed out citizenship to American boxer and analyst Roy Jones Jr., The Daily Mail noted.

Seagal’s acting career took off in the late 1980s and early 1990s after he acted in “Under Siege” and “Above the Law.”

Seagal received citizenship in Serbia in January.
