Texas Gov. Rick Perry is fighting to position Texas as the leader in adult stem-cell therapy, arguing the practice "holds the promise of miracles,” according to the
San Antonio Express-News.
The Republican told a conference of stem-cell researchers, industry leaders, and patients last week that the state’s “wildcat sprit” and “conducive climate” could help the technology flourish.
He added, “I'm not shy about asking people to relocate or start up their companies in Texas. All of you outside the state of Texas — come on in. The water's fine. We've got an amazing environment here.”
However, Perry’s push comes in the face of growing federal opposition to the research, with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) increasingly resistant to procedures that treat patients with their own stem cells.
The FDA has claimed the technology is under its jurisdiction and is not ready for mainstream commercial trials.
