Starship Technologies raised $25 million in seed funding and hired former Airbnb executive Lex Bayer as its new CEO in an attempt to ramp up its robot delivery business in the U.S. and Europe.

The startup out of London was founded in 2014 by Skype co-founders Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis. Heinla is stepping down as CEO and will now be CTO of the company, Business Insider reported.

Bayer will work out of San Francisco where he was located for Airbnb and functioned as the group head of business development, payments, and Airbnb for business, BI reported. Starship’s six-wheeled delivery robots now operate in Mountain View, California; Washington D.C.; Hamburg, Germany; and London along with other locations in the U.S. and Europe.

The robots can carry up to three 22-pound bags of goods and use the pavement to travel 4 to 5 miles per hour, with a maximum speed of 10 miles per hour possible, The Telegraph reported.

Starship Technologies plans to add to its current fleet of robots and reach more than 1,000 within a year, BI reported.

“We aim to get to thousands of robots doing deliveries and millions of people experiencing that kind of service soon, Heinla told BI.

The company said its machines have already covered more than 100,000 miles in 20 countries and over 100 cities and served more than 15 million people, BI reported. The Just Eat takeout delivery service in London has been trialing the robots there.

“This additional funding will allow us to deploy our robots in neighborhoods as well as corporate and university campuses in the U.S. and Europe,” Bayer said in a news release, BI reported.
