Starbucks’ new green cups are a Christmas tease that’s left some people wanting the coffee chain's red holiday cups back.
Starbucks gets a lot of attention during this time of year. As each holiday season approaches, the coffee giant is known for adding some flavor to the equation, whether that’s a seasonal latte, or a festive cup with a unique design.
With Christmas quickly approaching, Starbucks has kicked off the holiday season with a new cup, a green one. Even though their festive cup is usually red, the new cup is green and features “a mosaic of more than a hundred people drawn in one continuous stroke,” Eater noted.
According to the coffee chain, the new cup “represents the connections we have as a community, it’s meant to be a symbol of unity, and encourage us to be good to each other.”
“During a divisive time in our country, Starbucks wanted to create a symbol of unity as a reminder of our shared values, and the need to be good to each other,” said Howard Schultz, chairman and CEO, in a release.
However, instead of creating unity, the new cup has sparked a mixture of reactions.
The last time Starbucks caused a ruckus like this was in 2015 when they launched their “plain red ombre holiday cups,” which brought backlash from a few Christian groups before ultimately receiving national attention, Fox News noted.
The good news for Starbucks lovers is that the red cups could be making a comeback. Starbucks said Tuesday that the company’s other holiday plans “are still under wraps,” hence the boxes that are located in Starbucks stores labeled “no peeking,” CNN Money noted.
