"Star Wars" theme parks are coming to both of Disney's coastal properties, the company announced, giving fans the chance to pilot the Millennium Falcon for themselves.
"We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single-themed land expansion ever," Disney CEO Bob Iger said Saturday,
Agence France-Presse reported via Yahoo News.
"These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new 'Star Wars' planet, including an epic 'Star Wars' adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance."
News of the forthcoming theme parks came during Disney’s D23 fan expo at the Anaheim convention center, and Iger promised each of the 14-acre parks will be fully immersive, with rides, shows, restaurants, cantinas, wandering characters, and more.
"We’re creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single-themed land expansion ever. We knew it needed to be big, we knew it needed to be great, so we’re going to transport guests to a whole new planet," he explained. "You'll have a chance to run into all the droids and fantastic beasts."
Disney shared mockups of the park on its official Twitter account shortly after the announcement.
Disney also announced on Saturday that Colin Trevorrow, director of this summer's megahit "Jurassic World," will direct "Star Wars: Episode IX."
Disney purchased Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion in the fall of 2012.
