NASA has captured the image of SPT0615-JD, the most distant galaxy to ever be caught on camera.

Up until this point, astronomers have only been able to observe primitive galaxies at far distances as small red dots, but gravitational lensing has allowed them to see this galaxy, which has existed for over 13 billion years, in a much clearer light, Newsweek noted.

The gravitational field from a massive galaxy cluster sitting in front of the newly discovered SPT0615-JD amplified the light as it traveled to NASA's Hubble Telescope, warping space into a giant cosmic lens, NASA noted.

Thanks to this gravitational lensing phenomenon, the images could pick up far more light and produce a clearer picture of the remote galaxy.

Based on these images, astronomers were able to predict SPT0615-JD's size and mass, estimating it to be 1/100th the mass of our Milky Way and less than 2,500 light years in diameter, Newsweek noted.

Astronomers have been using gravitational lensing in their attempts to seek out galaxies that cannot be detected with standard telescopes, Astronomy Magazine reported.

However, Brett Salmon of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore said in a statement that no other candidate galaxy has been found at "such a great distance that also gives you the spatial information that this arc image does."

The galaxy is located right at the very limits of Hubble's detection capabilities but Salmon said it was just the beginning for the upcoming NASA James Webb Space Telescope's powerful capabilities.

"This galaxy is an exciting target for science with the Webb telescope as it offers the unique opportunity for resolving stellar populations in the very early universe," he said.
