Jordan Spieth is catching some fallout after appearing to rip into his caddie during the first round at the U.S. Open.

The New York Post noted his problems began Thursday on the par-4 eighth hole. Spieth’s tee shot rolled off a cliff to the rocks below.

After taking a drop, Spieth sent his third shot over the green and into the deep rough. He was heard muttering: “Two perfect shots.”

He then told caddie Michael Greller: “Two perfect shots, Michael. You got me in the water on one and over the green on the other.”

Spieth escaped with bogey and finished with a 1-over 72.

“Yeah, I may have looked like the bad guy there, but my intentions were that we should be in play if the ball is hit solidly, and I was out of play on both shots,” Spieth said.

“At the same time, when you hit a couple of shots exactly where you want to, and the first one is in the water and the next one is dead over the green, I’m going to be frustrated that as a team we didn’t figure out how to make sure that didn’t happen.”

Still, Spieth found himself the target of criticism on Twitter.

Sports reporter Eric Engels tweeted: “Jordan Spieth blaming his caddy for those two shots is embarrassing. Like he doesn’t know his distances?”

The Golf Channel’s Ryan Lavner observed: “Things aren’t going well for Spieth and caddie Michel Greller on 8.”
