South Carolina women's basketball team, the NCAA Women's champs, have declined a White House invitation to celebrate their national title on Friday evening.

The Gamecocks won their title in the spring, but the invitation to the White House arrived in November, after other championship teams had been invited, the New York Daily News reported.

Staley initially said her team would visit the White House should an invitation be extended, ABC News reported.

"It's what national champions do," she said in April, according to the network.

However by September the team had still not received their invitation, despite other teams receiving theirs.

"That in itself speaks volumes," Staley said, according to an Oct. 4 report by The State. "We won before those other teams won their championships. I don't know what else has to happen."

Days later, when queried on the topic again, Staley said, "Here's my take, and I'm not going to discuss the White House anymore. As far as I'm concerned, I'm over the White House invitation," The State noted. "The only invitation I would like is an invitation to get into the NCAA tournament in March. Other than that, I'm going to focus on my team."

Staley has stuck to her guns, stating on Thursday that the squad had finally heard from the White House but would not be attending.

"As I've been saying since our practices for this season started, all of our focus is on the season ahead," she said per ESPN. "The only invitation we are thinking about is to the 2018 NCAA Tournament."

Meanwhile The White House has said it will host 18 NCAA teams at the reception, ABC News reported.
