The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics kick off Friday with an opening ceremony that's rumored to showcase avant-garde art, ballet, and man-made snow. The opening ceremony actually begins at 11 a.m. EST Friday but will air on NBC in full at 7:30 p.m. EST.

Russia might not have the pop culture appeal that London did for the 2012 Summer Games, but the Olympic Committee is trying hard to craft an opening ceremony that will do the country justice.

"Unfortunately like London we can't boast a plethora of well-known pop performers," Sochi show producer Konstantin Ernst told reporters Friday, but added that the opening will highlight Russia's world-class performing arts like opera, ballet, and classical music.

Opera star Anna Netrebko will sing the Olympic anthem and musical group tAtu — the Russian pop duo that gained some international success in the U.S. a decade ago — will also perform, according to USA Today.

Amid all the hoopla and celebration are the security fears that have plagued the Sochi Games in recent months. Despite rumors of black widow terrorists and airplane toothpaste bombs, Russian officials still insist there are no threats for athletes or spectators at the Olympics.

"There is no reason to believe that the level of danger in Sochi is greater than at any other point on the planet, be it Boston, London, New York, or Washington," Dmitry Kozak, a Russian deputy prime minister, told reporters this week, according to Fox News.
