The rowdy British soccer fan who was arrested in April for punching a police horse in the neck has been sentenced to one year in jail.

Barry Rogerson, 45, was seen on camera drunkenly punching a police horse named Bud in the neck as officers tried to control a mob that raged outside the Tyne-Wear derby after Newcastle's 3-0 loss to Sunderland April 14. The horse was uninjured.

A total of 29 people were arrested for disorderly conduct. Rogerson was sentenced Thursday to 12 months in jail, and the judge also slapped him with a six-year U.K. soccer ban, according to the BBC.

Rogerson, who called himself an "animal lover," apologized for his actions and explained that the horse had charged him.

"This one particular horse was spooked by a firecracker and charged at me," he told the Daily Mail back in April. "That's when I panicked and threw a punch at the horse. I tried to get him away from me with my left hand and then punched him with my right. It was sheer panic."

Twitter users condemned Rogerson's actions and lobbied for #justiceforbud.
