A massive indoor ski and snow park to be opened in Shanghai by 2022 is on track to be the world’s largest indoor one, and Dubai-based retail giant Majid Al Futtaim is involved in the development, the company revealed this week.
Majid Al Futtaim is known for its involvement in the award-winning Ski Dubai, the Middle East’s first indoor ski slope, and now the company has set its sights on making the new snow park, Wintastar Shanghai, the largest and most impressive by design.
The snow park will measure 90,000 square meters, or nearly 1 million square feet – making it larger than the current largest indoor ski resort, the Harbin Wanda Indoor Ski and Winter Sports Resort in China's far northeast, CNN reported.
That park measures 80,000 square meters, or 869,000 square feet, and features six ski trails, The Wanda Group noted.
Wintastar Shanghai will be comprise of three ski slopes of varying gradients, including a slope of Olympic standard for training, Majid Al Futtaim reported.
The snow park will feature 25 snow play attractions and will be located directly opposite a Viking-themed water park and four hotels, as well as shops, restaurants, entertainment and competition venues, according to Shine.
The snow park comes as the demand for more ski resorts in China increases.
According to ISPO.com, there has been a significant uptick in the number of ski resorts, visitors to skiing regions, and the number of borrowed skis in the country.
Since 2015, an additional 78 ski resorts were opened, bringing the total number of skiing regions in China to 646.
“The boom is continuing unchecked. From the point of view of ski resort operators and suppliers, the market has almost no limits,” said Wu Bin, chief strategy officer of the Vanke Group.
