The 2014 Honda Civic will feature a new Siri Eyes Free mode from Apple.

Honda said Tuesday that the inclusion of Siri will be one of several features that are a part of HondaLink, designed to make the vehicle more technology friendly. It said the operation of Siri would be available on steering wheel-mounted controls when an iPhone is connected via Bluetooth.

"Display Audio and HondaLink are pioneering technologies that seamlessly and intuitively integrate the power and functionality of a customer's smartphone directly into their vehicle," Charles Koch, manager of new business development for American Honda, stated in a Honda news release Tuesday. "Staying connected to the latest music, information, news, traffic updates, even friends and family, is a must-have capability for a new generation of car buyers."

Honda calls the Siri-equipped Civic "the next generation of connected-car technology to meet the evolving needs of today's tech-savvy, always-connected consumers." It said that Honda Display Audio and HondaLink will "represent the most advanced information and media connectivity package ever offered by Honda."

"People behind the wheel can perform a variety of tasks via Siri, such as listening to turn-by-turn voice directions, checking the weather, grabbing stock quotes, setting up calendar reminders and alarms, and sending emails and text messages," wrote Lance Whitney of CNET.com.

Chris Davies, of Slashgear.com, said Honda even offers multiple options for navigation.

"Apple Maps isn’t the only option for navigation," Davies wrote Tuesday. "Honda has cooked up its own directions app, using Nokia … mapping data, with live traffic and 3-D graphics. Priced at $59.99, the app will support remote planning on a smartphone and then transferring the route into the car; it will also have turn-by-turn guidance, and points of interest."

Marshall Honorof of Tom's Guide said Honda's hand-free/eyes-free technology should allow motorists to safely operate the Civic while using technology.

"Combining smartphones and driving is a recipe for disaster — unless you have a system to keep your hands free and your eyes on the road," Honorof wrote. "One big upgrade is the addition of Apple's Siri Eyes Free feature, which allows owners of the iPhone 5 and later iPhone models to use voice commands."
