A mother's sign to a pumpkin thief, upset that her 2-year-old son's carved creation was hijacked, has gone viral on the Internet.

"To the person who stole my son's pumpkin: Thank you for the life lesson, this will help teach him that sometimes people are mean for no reason, and you have to just brush it off. Because my son is two years old and cannot read the sign, I will add, you are an (***hole)," read the sign of Becky Reina of Washuington, D.C.

Reina told WJLA-TV she left the sign after she believed someone took her son's pumpkin off the family's porch in LeDroit Park in Northwest Washington on Thursday.

Reina said there were four pumpkins on the porch for her, her husband, her infant daughter and her son Tommy. She said only Tommy's pumpkin was taken. Reina told the television station that neighbors told her several smashed pumpkins were found down the street and believes that's what may have become of her son's.

Neighbors also express sympathy for the Reinas, reported WJLA-TV.

"This person needs to be found and should read this sign and they should recognize what they did was wrong," neighbor Jamal Edwards told the television station.

Reina told WJLA-TV since the photo of the sign made the Internet, she has contacted by numerous media outlets, including the Daily Mail in London.

The Daily Mail's story, posted online Monday, included photos of Becky Reina and her son as she talked about the thievery's aftermath.

"I had already put up the sign to distract him from the loss of the pumpkin," Reina told the Daily Mail. "He definitely understands what happened. We put them out last Sunday and every morning when we went out he would point to each and say 'Daddy pumpkin, Mommy pumpkin, Tommy pumpkin, Abby pumpkin.'"

"When I told him over lunch on Monday that more people like our sign and are sorry about his pumpkin, he started crying and saying 'Tommy want Tommy pumpkin.' I was livid but recognized there was nothing I could really do to keep him from finding out only his was missing. So I wanted to distract him and shame the thief. They might never see the sign, but the thought made me feel a bit better," said Reina.

A photo of Reina's sign was posted on Eric Fidler's Left for LeDroit blog Sunday, which then was picked up by the Huffington Post and it took on a life of its own.
