Si Newhouse, publisher of Condé Nast, died Sunday at 89, his family confirmed in a statement.

"Today is a day of emotion, of genuine loss, for our family and for Si Newhouse’s extended family at Condé Nast," the family wrote on the Conde Nast website.

"Si loved Condé Nast. He was proud to publish the finest magazines in the world and to offer exceptional content on every digital platform."

The media mogul was directly responsible for building up the Condé Nast magazine empire, which today produces some of the world’s most prominent titles, including Vogue, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker and GQ, noted CNN.

According to Condé Nast, Samuel I. Newhouse, who preferred to go by the name Si Newhouse, was born Nov. 7, 1927 in New York. His father had acquired Condé Nast in 1959, and Si Newhouse joined the company in 1961. Fourteen years later he took up the position of chairman and played a vital role in the company’s expansion.

Si Newhouse also oversaw production at Advance Publications, a business which operates Condé Nast as well as various other local media companies that publish newspapers and websites in more than 25 cities in the U.S.

Since news of his death broke, tributes from fans, followers and prominent media personalities have been pouring in.

"Si Newhouse was the most extraordinary leader," said Anna Wintour, Condé Nast artistic director and editor in chief of Vogue. "Wherever he led, I followed, unquestioningly, simply because he put as much faith in me as I had in him."

David Remnick, editor of The New Yorker, said Si Newhouse’s "forbearances were as thoughtful as his actions, and he justly took pride in what had often seemed a long-odds scenario: a comic weekly from the Jazz Age, which has evolved and deepened in many ways, is now braving its tenth decade."

Remnick added "we honor the kindness, the vision, and the memory of a man who did so much to help make that possible."
