Three people were killed in a shooting near Colorado State University in Fort Collins in the early hours of Thursday morning, Police reported.

Among those dead is the suspect as well as a student at CSU, Sgt. Dean Cunningham said in a statement, adding that a fourth person had been injured.

The incident occurred just before 2 a.m. when police responded to a report of multiple gunshots being fired near 720 City Park Ave., The Coloradoan reported. Officers arrived to find that four people had been shot.

While details surrounding the incident remain vague, police have established that the suspect knew at least one of the victims.

A resident in the area, Brooke Ehlers, told The Coloradoan she was up late studying when she heard the gunshots and what sounded like a woman screaming. She called 911.

Jessica Sanow-Smith, a CSU graduate student living close to the scene, was asleep when the shooting occurred but her husband heard the gunshots and checked to ensure their doors were locked.

"I just woke up and had text messages from friends like, 'You live there. Are you OK?' And then I saw a bunch of emails on my phone (from CSU)," she told The Coloradoan.

The CSU student killed in the incident has been identified as Savannah McNealy.

The 22-year-old senior majored in art and would have graduated this December.

"A member of the student media staff and an intern on CSU’s Creative Services Team, she was well-loved and respected by those who knew her," University president Dr. Tony Frank said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the university released a statement noting that the other three involved in the shooting were not linked to CSU.
