One man has been shining shoes in the Pittsburgh Children's Hospital for 32 years. And over the decades, he's given every dime he's made in tips to the hospital.
This week, Albert Lexie will reach $200,000 in donations to the hospital.
Lexie says he's been shining shoes since 1957 and at the hospital since the early '80s. A shoeshine in the hospital only costs $5, but Lexie says most people give him $6 or $7, and one doctor gave him a $50 bill at Christmas.
He said whenever he's tipped, he gives every cent to the hospital where he works.
“I think he does it because he loves the kids,” Dr. Joseph Carcillo told local news station
WTAE-TV. “He's donated over a third of his lifetime salary to the Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund. He's a philanthropist, is what he is. He's an entrepreneur.”
All of Lexie's donations have been added to the free care fund, which helps parents who can't afford to pay their children's medical costs. One hospital worker said Lexie can bring in $700 to $800 a week.
"It's good to be a hero," Lexie told the news station.
