'Shiite Baptists': Pastor's Wife's Column May Have Cost Him His Job

By    |   Wednesday, 10 July 2013 12:32 PM EDT

The wife of an assistant pastor in Kentucky called Southern Baptists "raging Shiite Baptists" in a small-town newspaper column, lampooning the denomination for its opposition to the Boy Scouts of America's new policy welcoming gays among its ranks, and it may have cost her husband his position with his church.

The Associated Press wrote that Angela Thomas, in her regular column in the Madison Messenger, accused the Southern Baptist Convention of provoking discussions about sexuality with little boys thanks to its opposition to the Boy Scouts policy.

"Sexuality doesn't come up and isn't relative to typical scouting activities but now, thanks to Southern Baptists, the parents of little innocent scouts everywhere are having to have 'The Talk,'" she wrote June 19 in The Madisonville Messenger, according to the AP. She writes a weekly humor column for the community paper, which publishes daily.

The Associated Press reported that in her column, she accused the church leaders of "drifting to the right" for decades, adding, that they believed "Santa and the Easter bunny are simply the devil in disguise and cable television and the Internet are his playground. The Boy Scouts are his evil minions."

In May, the Boy Scouts announced that a new policy to allow gay troops to participate in the organization will take effect Jan. 1. Since then, numerous religious affiliations connected with the Boy Scouts announced that they are cutting ties with the organization.

Since the column, The Associated Press reported that First Baptist Church in Madisonville announced that Bill Thomas, Angela Thomas's husband, had resigned his position as assistant pastor. Thomas, though, said he had not quit, sparking more confusion.

The AP said the Thomases declined to be interviewed Tuesday regarding the controversy.

First Baptist member Larry Wilson told The Associated Press that Bill Thomas was accused of "intolerable insubordination" by a staff committee and was told to submit a letter of resignation.

"To me, it sounds more like a termination or a forced resignation than a resignation," Wilson said.

The Daily Caller reported Tuesday that a group of conservative former Boy Scouts have started a Christian alternative to the Boy Scouts called OnMyHonor.net.
