Sherin Mathews choked drinking milk while being "physically assisted" by her adopted father when she died, Wesley Mathews told suburban Dallas police per an arrest affidavit, KXAS-TV reported.

The 3-year-old girl's body was found in a drainage culvert Sunday after Wesley Mathews, 37, originally reported her missing on Oct. 7, the television station reported.

In his first story to authorities, Wesley Mathews reportedly told police in Richardson that the girl went missing and he went to look for her before returning home to do laundry believing she would return home, KXAS-TV said. He told police he reported her missing five hours later, per the television station.

In the new story, Wesley Mathews told police that he had been trying to get Sherin Mathews to drink milk but she refused.

"Eventually the 3-year-old girl began to drink the milk," the affidavit said, according to KXAS-TV. "Wesley Mathews then physically assisted the 3-year-old girl in drinking the milk. The 3-year-old girl began to choke. She was coughing and her breathing slowed. Eventually, Wesley Mathews no longer felt a pulse on the child and believed she had died."

Wesley Mathews was arrested Monday on a charge of injury to a child, according to the Dallas Morning News. The newspaper said that he had previously posted bond after being arrested on a charge of child endangerment the day the girl was reported missing.

Mathews, who works in information technology, is now being held on $1 million bail and faces up to life in prison, the Morning News reported.

Wesley Mathews' wife, Sini Mathews, has not answered police questions about what happened the day the girl went missing, the Dallas Morning News. Sini Mathews provided police with dental records used to identify Sherin Mathews' body, the newspaper noted.

Mitch Nolte, Sini Mathews' attorney, told the Morning News that his clients does not plan to provide any comment or interviews to police at this time.

The newspaper reported earlier that Sherin was adopted June 23, 2016, by the Mathews' family, an American couple of Indian origin, from Mother Teresa Anath Seva Sansthan, a nonprofit in India's Bihar state.
