A 200-year-old oak tree seen in the movie "The Shawshank Redemption" has been cut up and hauled away by the owners of the field in which it stood. The tree fell over during a storm last year and its owners were afraid tourists wanting to get pictures near the tree might get hurt and present a liability issue.

The owner of the property in Ohio, Dan Dees, said the tree had been rotting since 2011 and then a severe storm partially toppled it last summer, the Mansfield News Journal reported.

The oak was shown in one of the final scenes of the film, when Red, played by Morgan Freeman, finds a letter hidden nearby from former prisoner Andy.

Dees said he was offered money for the wood from the tree, but he declined.

“Some people have offered me money for it, (but) this is the last time (passers-by) are ever going to see it,” Dees told the Mansfield News Journal.

Dees said he is going to use the wood himself to make something, but he’s not sure yet what it will be — maybe a table or a bench. With the tree gone, the land will likely be farmed, Dees said.

Twitter fans were sad to see the iconic tree go and wished it could have been preserved somehow.
