A great white shark that broke through a diver's safety cage off the coast of Baja California shocked onlookers before the diver emerged from the water unscathed in the now viral video that was posted online Thursday.
The frightening video, posted on the Gabe and Garrett YouTube channel, has been viewed more than 425,000 times. The video was shot near Guadalupe Island off the coast of Baja California, KABC-TV reported.
The Huffington Post wrote that the YouTube channel normally posts children videos, but "Gabe and Garrett's" father Brian used it to show the dramatic shark video.
"These awesome sharks are biting at large chunks of tuna tied to a rope," read a statement on Gabe and Garrett YouTube video. "When a great white shark lunges and bites something, it is temporarily blinded. They also cannot swim backwards. So this shark lunged at the bait, accidentally hit the side of the cage, was most likely confused and not able to swim backwards, it thrust forward and broke the metal rail of the cage."
Stunned workers on the boat could be seen opening up the top of the cage where the shark came leaping out seconds later. After a few anxious moments, the diver later appeared. The video's statement said the diver ended up outside the bottom of the cage, "looking down on two great white sharks," but stayed calm.
"… When the shark thrashed back outside the cage, the diver calmly swam back up and climbed out completely uninjured. The boat crew did an outstanding job, lifting the top of the cage, analyzing the frenzied situation, and the shark was out after a few long seconds," according the to the video's statement.
Social media comments on the video ranged widely.
