Thirty-four years ago, Bobby Joe Long went on a killing spree, taking the lives of 10 women in the Tampa Bay area before finally being arrested.

This week he is set to receive a lethal injection at Florida State Prison. Ahead of his pending death, his now-ex-wife Cindy Brown has spoken out about her stormy relationship with the 65-year-old murderer and what life was like with a man who became an infamous serial killer.

"This is something that in my heart should have happened many, many years ago," she said about Long being executed, according to the The Associated Press.

The couple divorced in 1980 and four years later Long went on a killing rampage.

But Long’s violence didn’t come out of nowhere.  Brown reveals horrific details of their marriage and his violence toward her and how one day she pointed a gun at him and was ready to kill him but didn’t.

After that day he went on his murder spree and strangled most of his victims, though others were found bludgeoned to death or with their throats slit. Long's rage towards women also included raping them.

It was a 17-year-old survivor who eventually helped lead police to him eight months after the first killing. Long earned 28 life sentences and the death penalty. Brown said that, while she hated the idea of anyone's life being taken from them, Long deserved it.

"It's been a long time coming," she said. "You made your bed; it's time to lay in it."

Long and Brown were high school sweethearts who eventually got married and had two children — a son and a daughter, True Crime Daily noted. At first there were no signs of violence but then Long was involved in a motorcycle accident and suffered major head injury. Brown said that was when he changed.

During the time that they were married, Long became increasingly violent towards his wife. At one point he choked her and slammed her head into a TV set. She woke up on a sofa with Long next to her in  tears, promising her it would never happen again.

"Then the next words were, 'When you drive yourself to get your stitches, if you tell them what really happened, I'll kill you when you get home," she said.

After that beating Brown pointed a loaded shotgun at her husband, intending to kill him. She didn’t pull the trigger and is haunted by that decision because of all the lives he then went on to destroy.

"I have forgiven the man for what he did to me — the name calling, the physical violence, everything else,” she says.  ‘I don't think I will I ever forgive him for what this has caused my children, nor will I ever forgive him for what he did to those girls, whether they be the murder victims or the rape victims.

“Every one of the victims and the victim’s families are in my prayers,” she added. “I understand it’s not my fault, but tell my heart that. Make my heart believe that.”
