A popular podcast may take on the case of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, according to soldiers connected with the ex-Afghanistan POW who told
Maxim magazine they were interviewed by "Serial" host Sarah Koenig.
Maxim said it spoke with two former members of Bergdahl's unit in Afghanistan who were interviewed by the podcast producers and who told the magazine they didn't have confidence in Koenig's ability to cover the complicated issues surrounding the soldier.
"Serial," a spinoff podcast of the nationally syndicated public radio broadcast "This American Life," was a viral hit in 2014 when Koenig examined the case surrounding Adnan Syed, who was convicted of murder in Baltimore for the 1999 death of ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, said
The Hollywood Reporter.
The podcast galvanized a campaign to appeal Syed conviction.
The Bergdahl case is still evolving. The soldier faced a preliminary hearing last week at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio to determine if he should face a court-martial, said Maxim. A witness told the magazine that Koenig and at least one of "Serial's" producers attended the hearing.
"Serial" has not announced the subject of the case it will examine in its second season yet, reported Maxim.
Bergdahl, 29, went missing in 2009 after reportedly abandoning his troop's barracks and was captured by the Taliban. He was released by the Taliban in 2014 in a controversial prisoner swap for five Taliban officials held in Guantanamo Bay.
He was later charged with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy for leaving his outpost.
