Serena Williams was upset in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Thursday night by Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic.

For the second straight year, Williams misses out on an opportunity to make history as she was going for a seventh title at the U.S. Open, which would have been an Open-era record, The Associated Press noted. Sadly enough for her though, the suspense will have to continue into next year.

That also goes for a 23rd Grand Slam championship, another record that Williams will have to be patient for, and one that she failed to capture in 2015 when she lost to Roberta Vinci, ending her “hopes of a rare calendar-year slam,” CNN reported.

Outside of the records that are still untapped for the 34-year-old, maybe the biggest upset of all is the fact that her three-and-a-half-year reign as the world’s No. 1 in the WTA rankings is now over, and that came one week shy of what would have been another record for Williams, the AP noted.

Williams, who was playing Thursday night on an injured left knee, lost 6-2, 7-6.

“Karolina played great today. I think if she had played any less, then maybe I would have had a chance,” Williams said, according to the AP. “So I think I wasn’t at 100 percent, but I also think she played well. She deserved to win today.”

Pliskova, who was a 10th seed coming into Thursday’s match, will play No. 2 Angelique Kerber of Germany on Saturday for the title.

Tennis fans weren’t the only ones shocked by the upset. Pliskova was quite surprised herself, saying she couldn’t believe she beat the former No. 1 Williams before adding “I mean, actually, I do believe it. I always knew I have a chance to beat anyone if I’m playing my game,” the AP reported.

It was the first major semifinal for Pliskova, who beat the 34-year-old American’s older sister Venus in the fourth round.

“Obviously, the match with Venus helped me…not only with the game, but also with the crowd,” Pliskova said. “Was my first match on center court.”

Prior to defeating Williams, the 24-year-old had never made it past the third round in 17 previous appearances at majors. However, she’s now on an 11-match winning streak, according to the AP, and as she puts it, she only has “one more step to go.”
