Murphy was in the process of playing the oldest member of the Night’s Watch, Ser Denys Mallister, for the fifth season of "Game of Thrones." According to the Belfast Telegraph, he had reportedly told family and friends he was excited about the opportunity to play the role for the series that is in large part shot in his native Ireland.

"We will not be recasting JJ Murphy," the HBO show’s producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff said in a statement. "He was a lovely man, and the best Denys Mallister we could have hoped for. And now his watch is ended."

According to Entertainment Weekly, most of the scenes for the upcoming season of "Game of Thrones" will be shot in Spain.

Murphy also had a role as a village elder in the upcoming movie "Dracula Untold," and had roles in previous films such as "Mickybo and Me," "Cal," and "Angela's Ashes."

"I had the pleasure and honour to be his agent for the last 18 months and have never encountered a man with more spirit, passion and love for his craft," Philip Young said in a statement, according to CNN. "At this time our thoughts are with his family.'”

While having many movie roles to his credit, Murphy earned his acting chops in the theater while training with the Ulster Group Theatre School in the late 1940s. In addition, Murphy was a member of an actors trade union, Equity, and performed at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast for a long time, the same theatre where Liam Neeson and Ciaran Hinds honed their acting skills.

"His passion for theater, for the welfare and betterment of actors and those who worked in the performing arts was always there,” actress Maggie Cronin told the Belfast Telegraph of Murphy. “It was an integral part of the man."

According to CNN, the last time Murphy appeared on stage at the Lyric Theatre was in 2012 as part of "All Souls Night."

He is survived by his wife, Mary, and his children, Joseph and Jane.
