A new round of Sears layoffs affected 200 corporate employees last month after the company slashed another 220 jobs earlier this year, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Sears Holdings Corp. cut 150 of the jobs from its support center in Hoffman Estates, a Chicago suburb, spokesman Howard Riefs told the Tribune. He said the cuts, which took effect June 26, were across numerous units in the company.

The retailer would not say how many workers remained at its Hoffman Estate offices, but had told the newspaper last year that it had fallen below the 4,250-employee minimum in Hoffman Estates and its Loop satellite office to secure state tax breaks.

"As we work to advance our strategic transformation, we all know that we must return the company to profitability in order to retain the confidence of our constituents," Sears chairman and chief executive officer Edward Lampert said in a June 26 in a letter to employees.

"This means continuing to look at ways to streamline our operations while staying focused on our best members, best categories and best stores."

The Business Insider reported that Sears has been trying to find ways to cut costs after years of significant sales declines. The company has cut its brick-and-mortar stores from 1,980 in 2013 to 894 as of May 5.

Sears Holdings on May 31 informed workers at 15 Kmart stores and 48 Sears stores around the country that they will be closed by September. The company said those employees will get severance and will have a chance to apply for open positions at Kmart or Sears stores.

The company had already been trimming its corporate staff, cutting more than 500 jobs last year to go with the more than 400 jobs reductions this year, the Business Insider said.

"Having coworkers and friends leave the organization is never easy but making changes like these are a necessary part of creating a stronger organization in this time of industry disruption," Lampert wrote in the June 26 memo.

"We continue to fight every day to improve the performance of Sears Holdings — and you are central to that effort."
