A Saudi prince was executed for murder after a brawl in which another man was shot and killed, according to the country's interior ministry.

Prince Turki bin Saud al-Kabir was executed in the nation's capital of Riyadh, but there no details as to how he died, reported the Daily Mail, noting that beheading is the most common form of capital punishment in the country.

The Daily Mail said the brawl happened three years ago in Riyhadh.

According to the website Al Arabiya English, Saudi Arabia's interior ministry confirmed the execution in a statement.

"Turki bin Saud al-Kabir killed Saudi citizen Adel bin Suleiman bin Abdul Karim Mohaimeed," the statement said. "Authorities were able to arrest the above mentioned offender. After the investigations, they charged him of committing the crime and his indictment was sent to the General Court. He was charged with what was attributed to him and sentenced to death as retribution."

Al Arabiya said the charge was upheld in the Saudi court of appeals and supreme court. A royal decree followed those rulings to carry out the execution.

"King Salman's keenness on enforcement of security, justice and God's judgments," the interior ministry statement added, according to Al Arabiya.

Reuters said it is rare for a member of Saudi Arabia's ruling family to be executed. Faisal bin Musaid al Saud, who assassinated his uncle, King Faisal, was executed in 1975.

There are "several thousand" Saudi royal family members, who receive monthly stipends, with most senior princes holding great wealth and political power, Reuters said, though only a handful of family members hold important national government posts.

The Daily Mail said Saudi Arabia usually executes those convicted of murder and drug trafficking. Nearly 50 people were executed on a single day in January for 'terrorism,' including prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimrl.
