Sara Netanyahu, wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, could face potential criminal charges after allegedly using thousands of dollars of state money to fund personal expenses.

Israel's Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit said in a statement that he is considering filing charges against Sara Netanyahu for fraudulently procuring items as well as for fraud and breach of trust after she reportedly spent over $100,000 in public funds for private catering services, according to The Guardian.

Mandelblit informed her on Friday that he had decided to move forward after consulting with relevant authorities and examining evidence surrounding the allegations.

This announcement marks the first procedural step in formally charging Sara Netanyahu, who is being given a final opportunity to state her case at an indictment hearing.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the accusations on Facebook, dismissing the allegations against his wife as "absurd."

He further stated that "Sara Netanyahu is a brave and honest woman and has never done anything wrong. Alongside her work as an expert educational psychologist treating children every week, she spends a lot of time helping children with cancer, Holocaust survivors and lone soldiers."

Sara Netanyahu is accused of using state funding to hire outside catering services by creating a misleading impression that the prime minister's official residence did not employ any cooks between 2010 and 2013, according to Reuters.

"In this way, hundreds of meals from restaurants and chefs worth 359,000 shekels ($102,399) were received from the state fraudulently," a justice ministry statement said, according to Reuters.

The Associated Press reported that investigations that Sara Netanyahu bought furniture for their private beach house with government money, used state funds to cover her father's medical expenses and improperly hired an electrician who was a political supporter, were dropped.
