SantaCon was a busy day for cops in Hoboken, New Jersey with 17 arrests and 55 hospitalizations, mostly for alcohol and drugs, which Police Chief Ken Ferrante called “staggering.”

Ferrante kept count via a live tweet as the city's cells filled up with revelers who were booked during the rowdy annual pub crawl there on Saturday, CBS News reported.

By the end of the event the numbers had far exceeded last year’s tally, which saw just five people arrested and 23 transported to hospitals.

Numerous brawls broke out across the city, prompting violence towards police officers. The scene reportedly resembled a battle field as police officers took numerous hits, and the occasional spitting, while attempting to bring order to the streets.

According to ABC News, those arrested included 22-year-old Ashley Astalos, who was charged with aggravated assault for allegedly punching an officer in the jaw.

Another police officer was allegedly struck in the face by 21-year-old Janelle Chirino of North Bergen, who was kicked out of a bar and became aggressive.

One of those arrested allegedly spat in an officer’s face at police headquarters.

One man jumped onto an officer’s back as he tried to intercede in a fight in which a fellow officer was struck down.

The annual event is held in cities across the world to raise money for charity, said Time, but Ferrante slammed the event.

“How some try to paint this as a "CHARITABLE EVENT" is absolutely laughable," he said in a tweet, per CBS News.

According to NBC News, a total of 51 summonses were issued for drinking in the street, public urination and disorderly conduct, and an additional 32 summonses were issued to drivers.
