Sandwiched Between Trucks, Oregon Driver Suffers Scratches

Sandwiched between two big rigs on Saturday after being part of a 26-vehicle accident on Interstate 84 in Oregon, Kaleb Whitby managed to walk away from his mangled pickup truck with no more than scratches, according to CNN.

News footage showed Whitby peering out of what was left of his smashed and recognizable pickup truck that was wedged between the two tractor-trailers and he told CNN the ordeal was frightening.

Whitby recounted the incident 33 miles east of Baker City on CNN's "New Day," on Monday.

"When I saw those lights coming, I knew he was going to hit me," Whitby, 27, said about the first tractor-trailer hitting him. "And then I closed my eyes and prayed that everything turned out OK. That was all I could do."

Whitby said he could do nothing more than grab his wheel tightly when the second semi-trailer came smashing into his pickup and crushing it.

"It was just metal crunching and glass. It was just all fast and loud," Whitby told CNN. "I do believe, and I'm very firm in that, and I just held on to the wheel as tight as I could, tucked my head and just kept praying the whole time. After he hit, I just hoped that it would be over with soon."

"When the second truck hit my back end, it spun my bed underneath the first trailer that I hit and continued to swing my nose around, and I guess put my nose underneath the second trailer," Whitby told CNN. "And as that trailer came around, it just kind of pushed me down and further into that – that small V where you can actually see both the trailers within arm's reach on both sides. And so if they would've pushed me even a foot, it would have crushed me."

The Oregonian reported that at least 12 people were injured in the Saturday pileup but no one died.

"I still can't believe no one died in that," Oregon State Police Sgt. Kyle Hove told the newspaper, adding that authorities are using a digital system to perform a crash reconstruction.

"They'll be able to piece together a visual on where the vehicles landed," said Hove. "They've been taking statements from drivers and witnesses and will be able to paint a clear picture of what occurred."
