Bernie Sanders tops Hillary Clinton by one percentage point in a California presidential primary poll out on Thursday, as he continues what could be a historic surge going into next Tuesday's voting, reported the Los Angeles Times.

Sanders' 44-43 lead over Clinton in the University of Southern California Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll is a nine point swing from the same poll conducted in March, noted the Times. The margin is within the poll's 3.7 point margin of error.

"Bernie Sanders has tapped into a wellspring of support in the Democratic primary over the last several weeks and he's closing with a rush," said Dan Schnur, director of USC's Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics, in a news release on the poll. "If Clinton manages to hold him off and win the primary, it would be as a result of a low turnout that tilts the electorate in her direction."

The Times said Clinton's hopes in California hinge on those most likely to vote, based on their voting history and stated intentions this time around. Among those, Clinton leads Sanders 49 percent to 39 percent in the new poll.

Clinton also leads among registered Democrats, 53 percent to 37 percent.

According to the poll, Sanders has increased his lead among voters with no party preference who are eligible to cast a ballot in the Democratic presidential primary. The poll said Sanders almost doubled his lead with those voters and he now tops Clinton 50 percent to 34 percent.

California's confusing state election laws that require 'no party preference' voters to ask for a second ballot to participate in the Democratic primary may hurt Sanders on Tuesday.

"Sanders has been the most successful in states where independent voters are able to participate in the Democratic primary, but the added obstacle in California could sideline large numbers of his supporters," said Schnur.

"If he's going to win California, his campaign will have to pull off the most massive voter education project in California history between now and Tuesday morning."
