A San Luis Resort shooting has left four people dead in what police are calling a murder-suicide, Fox News reported.

The victims, a father and his two young sons ages 10 and 5, were allegedly shot dead early on Monday morning by the mother who then turned the gun on herself, according to Time magazine.

Police were alerted to the incident at the Southeast Texas beachfront hotel by a guest in a nearby room on the eighth floor who reported hearing gunshots at around 4:30 a.m.

Officers arriving at the scene found the man and two boys lying in bed and the woman lying on the hotel room's floor. All had sustained gunshot wounds.

Captain Joshua Schirard of the Galveston Police Department said the women and one of the children were "unresponsive but still appeared to be alive," Fox News noted.

They were taken to hospital but later pronounced dead.

"The motive is unknown at this time, but forensic data collected at the scene indicates that the female is believed to be the shooter at this time, and is believed to have killed her two children and her husband before apparently taking her own life with a 9mm handgun found adjacent to her body," the Galveston Police Department said in a statement.

The family from Baytown checked into the San Luis Resort around 7 p.m. on Sunday but Fox News noted that there was no apparent issue at the time and nothing in the room indicated a struggle.

KHOU has since identified the woman shooter as Flor de Maria Pineda and her husband as Mauricio Morale, a couple described by neighbors as "beautiful people."

"She was very friendly," said Shirley Davis, a neighbor to the family. "She waved at us. Her husband was very friendly…"

It is believed the two children had attended classes at Victoria Walker Elementary School, ABC News reported.

The Goose Creek ISD released a statement following the incident, stating that a student death could have a "ripple effect on a school community," and that it would hold additional counseling services at the school "out of concern for the students' classmates and the campus faculty."
