A San Francisco highway shooting sent three people to the hospital and resulted in southbound Interstate 280 being shut down for just under four hours on Monday morning, NBC News noted.

The incident occurred when shots were fired at a black Cadillac Escalade carrying five people at around 3 a.m. near Alemany Boulevard, according to CBS News.

Three of the five people in the vehicle were injured in the shooting and had to be rushed to the hospital, but are expected to survive, authorities said.

Multiple shell casings were found spread out on the highway, and based on this, investigators believe the shots were fired from another vehicle, although the information they have is limited.

"From the evidence collected at the scene it does look like it was vehicle to vehicle, because of where the shell casings were placed, where they landed," said California Highway Patrol officer Vu Williams, according to ABC News.

However, the victims were unable to provide a detailed account of how the event unfolded and Williams said it was "impossible to say" whether the shooting was a direct attack on the victims or whether it was randomized, CBS News noted.

"None of the five claimed that they saw anything or know anything about it. It is what it is," Williams said per The San Francisco Chronicle.

Southbound lanes at Alemany were closed for hours as investigations were conducted and, according to ABC News, a Sig-alert was issued at 3:23 a.m. and lanes were reopened again at 6:48 a.m.

Meanwhile, the gunman is still at large while investigators try to piece together the shooting.
