In San Diego, a "Patriot Picnic" in Chicano Park turned violent, with a police officer getting punched in the face and three people being arrested amid escalating tensions between picnic organizers and a much larger gathering of park supporters holding an event to celebrate the park's cultural heritage.

The picnic, which drew a handful of people, was hosted by the Bordertown Patriots Inc. on Saturday as a call to officials to fly the American flag at the local landmark.

Meanwhile, around 700 counterprotesters gathered at the park and, while the San Diego Reader reported a strong police presence, emotions began to fly as the day wore on.

"We love the park, we love the murals," said one picnicker, Jeane Solnordal, who was supporting the Bordertown Patriots event, according to Fox News. "It's just that the Chicanos think that it's a park for them alone and it's not."

Roger Ogden, an organizer of the picnic, said per the L.A. Times that the event was not a protest.

"The goal is just to demonstrate whether there is city-sponsored discrimination at Chicano Park against certain people, due to their race, ethnic background and politics," he said.

Meanwhile counterprotesters like David Ramina said the Bordertown Patriots were "not trying to cultivate any positivity…they're here to antagonize these people," Fox News reported.

Alberto Lopez Pulido, a University of San Diego professor and member of the Chicano Park Steering Committee added that they wanted to "let people know what the park means, the fact that we have 88 murals here, we have National Landmark status," the L.A. Times noted.

An altercation allegedly broke out when members of the "Patriot Picnic" group were leaving and angry words were exchanged with the park supporters.

The L.A. Times reported that fights erupted in the street, although it was not clear which side instigated it.
