Samsung Galaxy Note 7 production has been halted in cooperation with consumer safety regulators, as the crisis involving fire-starting-batteries worsens, a source told South Korea's Yonhap News Agency on Monday.

The Galaxy Note 7 smartphone is in the middle of a global recall of 2.5 million units after reports surfaced that some of the devices were catching fire due to faulty batteries, noted Yonhap. An official from a supplier for Samsung Electronics told the news agency of the stoppage.

The halt in production occurred after media reports that some of the replacement parts offered by Samsung for the Galaxy Note 7 have also caught fire, reported Yonhap. The source said the company was working in cooperation of safety regulators from South Korea, the United States and China.

"Social media images of photographs of charred Note 7 phones have only added to the humiliation felt by Samsung, an iconic South Korean firm that has built a reputation for innovation and quality since entering the consumer electronics market in the late 1960s,"  said Justin McCurry, a writer for The Guardian

Reuters said concerns were raised about Galaxy 7 replacement parts when one of the exchanged smartphones grounded a Southwest Airlines flight from Louisville to Baltimore.

Sarah Green told Reuters her husband had replaced his original Galaxy Note 7 two weeks ago after receiving a message from Samsung about its recall.

"Until we are able to retrieve the device, we cannot confirm that this incident involves the new Note 7," Samsung said at the time.

But that incident and a similar one in China that involved the charging of a replaced Galaxy Note 7 helped prompt AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile to stop offering replacement Note 7s, reported CNN on Monday.

Verizon and Sprint opted last week to exchange new Galaxy Note 7 devices for other smart phones in the light of new reports. Samsung had been encouraging Note 7 owners to exchange their devices with new ones, wrote Yonhap.
