Samantha Snipes and Temple Phipps were strangers when they met on a commercial flight, but their meeting would later lead to Phipps adopting Snipes' baby boy.

Life looked bleak for Snipes in 2016 when she learned she was pregnant by her abusive former boyfriend.

“After finally gaining the strength to leave my abusive relationship, I found myself in a very dark and lonely place mentally,” Snipes told People. “I knew I loved this life inside of me, but I didn’t love myself or the place I was in at that time. I loved [my son] so much and that’s why knew he deserved better.”

The circumstances left her both frightened and alone.

"I was scared. I was three months pregnant with this man’s child and feared him," Snipes wrote on Love What Matters. "I left that night and never looked back."

That’s when she flew to her mother’s home in Arkansas to work things out. By that time she was 12 weeks pregnant and completely stressed out.

"I was discouraged and depressed," she wrote. "I was trying to imagine a place where my child was going to be nurtured and grow."

When Snipes' pregnancy hit eight months, she took another flight to North Carolina to see a new boyfriend she’d met online. She’s missed her connecting flight, and was seated next to Phipps on the new one. The two began talking.

“She was so welcoming and bubbly and sweet. She was exactly the person I needed to meet at that moment when I was terrified and scared and alone,” Snipes told People of Phipps. “Neither of us should have been on that plane. I was so anxious to meet my boyfriend and terrified of having no plan for my child. She felt like a longtime friend after just a few minutes of talking.”

During the flight, Phipps revealed that although single, she’d always wanted to raise a child.

Phipps immediately connected with baby Vaughn after his Oct. 6, 2016 birth, and Snipes asked if her new friend might be willing to adopt the boy. The answer was yes.

“I was in absolute shock and started crying and shaking,” Phipps, 42, told People of the offer. “I was holding Vaughn at that time and could not believe the miracle that was taking place.”

Two weeks later, Phipps took Vaughn to her own home and the adoption was finalized in August of 2017.

Now the two women are planning a book of the chance encounter and what came of it.

“We not only are bonded by Vaughn but have a true friendship as well,” Phipps told People. “Life as Vaughn’s mother is amazing. He was absolutely meant to be my son and he fills my heart and house with so much love and joy. I am grateful everyday and never take this gift for granted. I am confident that when Vaughn learns of his journey to me he will understand the selfless and courageous choice that Samantha made to ensure he has a beautiful life.”

The Samantha Snipes-Temple Phipp story warmed hearts on social media.
