Former "Good Morning America" weatherman Sam Champion will return to ABC next week to fill in for current meteorologist Ginger Zee while she's on maternity leave, the show announced this week.
To make the announcement, Champion and Zee acted out a skit in which they played themselves, ABC News reported
While tending to her new baby Adrian Benjamin, born just last month, Zee gives Champion a call and asks if he could fill in for her. He of course says yes, and the skit comes to an end.
After the segment, Zee joined the GMA team by phone.
"He has to take full credit for the dip in the jet stream, all the cold air coming in right now," she joked, referring to Champion.
"Second, I have a tally of Lara's puns [in 'Pop News'], so if you can just keep that going. And finally, just take care of the audience because I am going to miss them probably just as much as anyone else."
"[The audience] is the most fun part of the entire show, to get outside and spend some time with the people who come to see us," Champion about his upcoming gig. "I think I have to buy a winter coat."
Champion resigned his post in Dec 2013, passing the torch to Zee as he took up the anchor slot at The Weather Channel's morning show, "America's Morning Headquarters."
According to The Hollywood Reporter
, "the network has since reorganized its programming schedule, a consequence of belt-tightening, and Champion's show was among those axed. He has since been anchoring breaking weather news and focusing on digital initiatives at the network, while also readying a primetime interview show."
One TV insider told Page Six
that, "Behind the scenes, people are saying that the move to let Champion on ‘GMA’ means NBC doesn’t care if he leaves Weather Channel…It’s a situation like with Josh Elliott, who was being paid a lot to not do much."
