A judge in Madrid has ordered the body of surrealist master painter Salvador Dali be exhumed to test the remains as part of a paternity lawsuit filed by a woman claiming to be Dali’s daughter.

Spanish woman Pilar Abel Martinez filed a suit in 2015 after taking several paternity tests, one with inconclusive results and one with results that were withheld from her, according to the New York Post. Martinez claims her mother insisted for years that she was Dali’s child from an affair she had with him when she worked as a maid for another family in Port Lligat in the 1950s.

The judge ordered the exhumation because there were no other ways to get enough remains to do a paternity test, CNN reported. Dali’s family and the Salvador Dali Foundation are appealing the ruling.

The son of official Dali biographer Robert Descharnes said he was told by the doctor who conducted one of the DNA tests that Martinez had been told it was negative and she was not related to Dali, the Post reported.

Martinez, 60, was born in 1956 and has worked as a tarot card reader for many years. She said she does not read her own cards, however, The Washington Post reported.

Dali was married to his wife Gala for 48 years until she died in 1982. The couple did not have children together. Dali died in 1989.

Twitter users joked the news was surreal and said they thought the woman was just trying to “cash in” on his estate.
