Salem State University stabbing suspect Timothy Wells was arrested Wednesday night by police in upstate New York.

The 25-year-old college senior had allegedly stabbed two individuals on a university shuttle bus earlier in the day, one female student, and the other a school bus driver who attempted to intervene.

"A male approached one of the female students and apparently went after her," Salem State spokeswoman Karen Cary told WCVB.com. "She sustained non-life-threatening injuries, very fortunately, superficial wounds to her hand."

"At that point, the male bus driver got up to intervene and help her, and he sustained a minor laceration to his chest," Cady added, claiming that the student did not know her attacker.

The unidentified female victim was treated at the scene, after reportedly refusing to go to the hospital, while the male bus driver was taken to North Shore Medical Center Salem Hospital for further treatment.

The stabbing, which occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m., prompted class cancellations and a school-wide lockdown at Salem State University that lasted for several hours as authorities searched the campus for Wells, CBS local affiliate WBZ reported.

The Horace Mann Laboratory School, a nearby public elementary school, also locked down their campus as a precaution, Boston.com reported.

At the time of the stabbing, Wells had taken a two to three week leave from Salem University and was not living on campus, according to school officials.

He was last seen leaving the campus shortly after the stabbing driving a 1999 Toyota Camry, according to police.

At approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday, police found Wells with his vehicle broken down along the side of the road on a highway in Chatham, N.Y., which is close to the Massachusetts border, the Associated Press reported.

In addition to the warrant from Wednesday's Salem University stabbing, Wells was facing other charges from a Sept. 3 arrest, when he was found by police with a 4-inch folding knife near the school's football field in an area on campus that was under construction.

When approached by police on the football field, authorities say that Wells told them he was meditating and trying to become one with nature, Boston.com reported.

Wells is expected to face a New York judge on Thursday.
