The 2017 SAG Awards were full of surprises Sunday night, including a political meltdown by Hollywood celebrities that practically shoved coverage of the film and television winners out of the news the next morning. (There's a complete winners list at the end.)

In one of the night’s biggest shockers, actor Denzel Washington who stars in “Fences” went home with his first SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture, said USA Today.

“Hidden Figures” was another shocker of as the film took home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, said E! News.

Drama series, “The Crown,” came up big, too, as two of its cast members took home awards: Claire Foy, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, and John Lithgow, Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.

Awards shows are usually about the winners, “thank you” speeches, and which celebrities wore the most fashionable outfits. However, this year’s SAG awards quickly became about President Donald Trump’s busy first week in the White House.

Actors took the stage to denounce Trump for his controversial temporary immigration ban, noted USA Today.

“Good evening, fellow SAG-AFTRA members and everyone at home – and everyone in airports that belong in my America,” Ashton Kutcher said to start the show, per the Washington Post. “You are a part of the fabric of who we are, and we love you and we welcome you.”

“This (movie) is about what happens when we put our differences aside and come together as a human race,” said Taraji P. Henson, who starred in “Hidden Figures,” per USA Today.

Mahershala Ali, who won Outstanding Supporting Actor for his role in “Moonlight,” delivered an emotional speech, recalling the time he shared with his mother that he had converted to Islam, and how they’ve been able to set aside their differences and still love one another.

“She didn’t do backflips when I called her to tell her,” he said, according to USA Today. “But I tell you now, we put things to the side, and I’m able to see her. She’s able to see me. We love each other. The love has grown, and that stuff is minutiae.”
