It has been 17 years since Hollywood actor Ryan O'Neal has seen his once-estranged daughter, Tatum, and her three kids, but the family has put its differences aside for a heartwarming reunion. The moment was even caught on camera.
Taking to Instagram on Monday, O'Neal's grandson, Sean, 32, shared a family photo of himself posing with O'Neal, 79, Tatum, 56, and his siblings Kevin, 34, and Emily, 29, according to Daily Mail.
"This is one of the most memorable photos of my life," he captioned the image. "The last time we were all together was at the 30-year Paper Moon Anniversary in 2003."
Tatum appeared alongside her father in the 1973 film "Paper Moon," and the performance earned her an Academy Award. Since then, their volatile relationship has seen its share of ups and downs. Both have struggled with substance abuse, which put further strain on their fractured relationship, and it has taken decades for them to reconcile. Sean said he was just grateful that the family was able to work through its conflict.
"I could cry tears of gratitude that everyone in this photo is still alive and that we were all able to come together again after so many years of hardship," he continued in his post to Instagram. "The entire West Coast is burning, but if the O'Neals can reconcile, truly anything is possible."
Tatum and Ryan's relationship took a massive hit after they had a falling out that lasted nearly 25 years. They reconciled in 2011, but at some point cut contact again. Several years later, Tatum offered an olive branch to her father.
"I want to say to my dad, if you're watching this, I love you. I've always loved you and forgiveness is the best policy," she said on "Megyn Kelly Today," per Daily Mail.
"I don't want to hold on to anger and resentments. I want to have a free, happy and guilt-free life. My dad did a lot of good for me and I have to just respect his life and his process. Maybe someday he and I will have a moment where we [reconcile]."
