Russia? White House Hacking Thought to Be by Russian Government

By    |   Wednesday, 29 Oct 2014 04:16 PM

A breach of White House computer networks is thought to be the work of hackers working for the Russian government.

The incident caused a disruption as officials worked to secure the networks, but the systems weren’t damaged, and officials haven’t found any evidence that the classified network was hacked, The Washington Post reported.

An investigation in ongoing, involving the FBI, Secret Service, and National Security Agency.

An ally alerted the government of the breach, which was discovered two or three weeks ago. Russian hackers also have targeted NATO, the Ukrainian government, and U.S. defense contractors, the Post reported.

"On a regular basis, there are bad actors out there who are attempting to achieve intrusions into our system," a White House official said, according to the Post. "This is a constant battle for the government and our sensitive government computer systems, so it’s always a concern for us that individuals are trying to compromise systems and get access to our networks."

White House spokesman Josh Earnest confirmed that a breach was detected but declined to speculate who was responsible, USA Today reported.

"Our computers and systems have not been damaged, though some elements of the unclassified network have been affected," the White House said. "The temporary outages and loss of connectivity for our users is solely the result of measures we have taken to defend our networks."

Twitter users offered mixed reactions.
