A Russian high-rise collapse on Thursday afternoon killed at least six people, European news channel France 24 reported.

City officials in the provincial city of Izhevsk said they believed a gas explosion caused the corner section of the nine-story residential building to collapse, resulting in eight apartments being completely destroyed.

According to the report, more than 200 emergency officials were at the scene looking for survivors and, by Friday, the death toll had climbed to six, with three injuries reported.

Among the dead was a child and a 60-year-old woman, officials said per France 24.

The Independent reported that two teenage boys had also been hospitalized and that 500 residents were evacuated from surrounding tower blocks.

A witness described the scene, saying there “was the sound of such a loud blast that even the building shook," ENCA reported.

“The building folded as if it was a house of cards,” another witness said, according to RT. “We could smell gas right away. We saw a young woman bleeding, she was apparently hit by shrapnel in her head.”

Emergencies ministry representative Pyotr Fomin said that at least 28 residents lived in the building but estimated there had not been more than 15 people at home when the collapse took place.

Gas explosions are not uncommon in Russia, The Independent noted, where the combination of Soviet housing stock and poor maintenance often had devastating effects.

Last year seven people were killed in a gas explosion when part of a block of flats collapsed in the city of Yaroslavl, north of Moscow, The Daily Maverick reported.

Ten people were killed in 2012 when a gas explosion in the southern city of Astrakhan caused an entire side of a nine-story building to collapse.
