A rugby player had his finger amputated but not for the reasons why you might think.

Plagued by injury to his left middle finger, South Sydney Rabbitohs star Angus Crichton had a choice: He could undergo another surgery and miss the first three months of the 2018 season, or he could have the top half of his finger removed, Sports Illustrated noted. The 21-year-old told doctors to amputate.

Crichton's manager David Rawlings confirmed that the surgery took place earlier this week, Fox News reported.

The backrower had undergone several surgeries on his middle finger after rupturing the tendon during a game, and his range of movement was severely limited, resulting in numerous breaks. Faced with the prospect of undergoing another surgery, and missing out on the prospect of making a name for himself in the next season, Crichton opted for amputation.

"My finger has been an ongoing injury I've had since I was playing in the under-20s," he said, per The Guardian, explaining that the injury left him without a knuckle.

"The doctor said I could either cut it off halfway or fuse it. I've had it fused several times now because I keep breaking it. I can't bend the finger, so it's like I'm constantly giving people the bird. If I clench my fist, my middle finger sticks out."

Rather than let the injury pull him into a state of depression, Crichton has remained upbeat and even taken to seeing the funny side.

"One time, a while back, I accidentally cut someone off while I was driving and I put my hand up to wave at them to say sorry," he said, per Sports Illustrated.

"The guy followed me all the way into a dead-end street. We each got out of our cars and he asked me if I'd stuck my finger up at him. I explained to him that I'd had it fused and it stuck out naturally. He understood after that."
