Rudy Giuliani: We Will Replicate New York Success in London

By    |   Tuesday, 05 March 2013 12:41 PM

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani plans to implement the same strategy he used to grow his law firm's New York City business to nurture similar results at the company's U.K. branch.

A partner at the Houston-based energy firm Bracewell & Giuliani, the former mayor and one-time aspiring presidential candidate outlined his plans for the London office in a video interview this week with legal news website The Lawyer.

"We're encouraged by our experience in New York," Giuliani said, noting that the NYC office launched in 2005 with just three employees. There are now around 100 lawyers working out of that location. "Twenty percent succeed, 80 percent fail. We're one of the ones that succeeded greatly and grew our practice internationally as a result of being in New York. We think London is very similar to New York in that regard."

Bracewell & Giuliani announced plans in January to grow its already established London branch that opened in 1979.

"Now we have the ambition to grow," Giuliani told The Lawyer, citing the firm's other locations in Dubai, Washington, D.C., and Seattle.

The firm chose to expand the London office in order to claim a stake in the up-and-coming legal market for hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, a controversial process that allows people to recover natural gas and oil.

Bracewell & Giuliani also hopes to broaden its other international projects.

"The idea now is to put our attention to growing the London office to the level it should be so we can participate in a lot of these energy deals that are going on, particularly in Africa and the Middle East," Giuliani said in the video interview. "With our office in Dubai we already do a lot of work in the Middle East and we want to do more in Africa as well."

Giuliani served as mayor of New York between 1994 and 2001. He also served as the U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York, where he prosecuted several high-profile cases, including ones against the Mafia and Wall Street financiers such as Ivan Boesky and junk bond trader Michael Milken.
