A "Roseanne" spinoff is closer to reality, sources have told People magazine, with discussions about continuing a show that will center on Sara Gilbert's character.

Despite its successful return to ABC this year after being off the air since 1997, "Roseanne" was abruptly cancelled last month when its namesake Roseanne Barr suggested that former adviser to President Barack Obama Valerie Jarrett was a cross between the "Muslim Brotherhood" and "Planet of the Apes" on Twitter, CNN noted at the time.

Gilbert, who played Barr's television daughter Darlene on the show, appears to be the focal point in the reboot to the "Roseanne" reboot, the source told People. Gilbert, who also co-hosted the CBS daytime show "The Talk," was one of the show's first stars to speak in favor of the cancellation after Barr's Twitter statement, according to Variety.

"There are still issues to hash out," the source told People. "The key has been how a show can be done where Roseanne neither participates nor profits. As of now, she has agreed, at least in theory, to forego any creative or financial involvement in the spinoff to help save the cast and crew jobs."

A Barr-less "Roseanne" is being insisted upon by ABC and producer Carsey-Werner, The Hollywood Reporter said. The celebrity publication said costars Laurie Metcalf, who played Barr's character's sister, and John Goodman, who portrayed her husband on the show, are tentatively on board.

The source told The Hollywood Reporter that with the tentative agreement by Barr to walk way from the show for the sake of her cast and crew to keep jobs for at least one more season, negotiations now center around what, if any, payment Barr should receive as "go-away" money.

The original series was created by Matt Williams "based upon a character created by Barr," giving her rights to benefit from any spinoff, which appeared to be the initial sticking point from even discussing spinoff possibilities, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For now, social media appears to be cool to a "Roseanne" reboot without Roseanne.
