"Roseanne" producer Bruce Helford is urging fans to ignore Hitler pics that star Roseanne Barr shot in a 2009 interview about the show’s success.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Helford addressed the pics, which hit social media over the weekend and prompted some to call for a boycott of the hit reboot. The photo shoot showed Barr dressed up as Hitler and taking burned gingerbread cookies made to look like Jews out of the oven.

“My feeling is that people should just watch the show and judge it on its merits,” Helford said. “Watch the show without the accompanying background noise.”

To put the images in context, the original shoot was for a satirical Jewish publication, and Barr is a Jew herself and a vocal supporter of Israel, Snopes pointed out.

Helford also points out Barr’s support for Israel and the fact that there was “probably some amount of parody involved” in the shoot.

“We all hoped that this would open a dialogue where people would start laughing at themselves a little bit, get a little less polarized and realize that this is a universal conversation. Lots of people find themselves divided on these issues,” Helford continued in the interview.

“There should be an understanding that there is a difference between people’s personal politics and what you present onscreen. We’re hopefully presenting a wonderful, balanced show that doesn’t have an agenda. But beyond that, anybody can dig into anybody’s stuff and find stuff,” Helford said, adding that “people have the option to turn it off if they don’t want to watch.”

“Roseanne” premiered to the highest ratings for a new sitcom in several years. It’s up to 25 million viewers even before the plus-7 (DVR) returns are completed, which is even higher than this year’s Oscars, THR reported.

The show has already been renewed for a second season.
