Ronan Farrow Says His Mom Mia Farrow Had 'Black Motheritis'

Ronan Farrow said his mother, actress Mia Farrow, had "black motheritis" as the parent of an adoptive black child.

Mediaite.com reported that Farrow and guest Jonathan Capehart were discussing Saturday's killing of unarmed Missouri teen Michael Brown on his MSNBC news show when he made the comments. Capehart said that Brown's death reminded him of the extra lessons his mother felt she needed to teach him since they were black.

"Don’t run in public. Don’t run with anything in your hands. Keep a discreet distance away from white women, lest you get accused of any number of things," he said, noting that black men are often viewed with suspicion by police and the public at large.

"If anyone is under siege, I would say it is African-Americans and African-American men in particular," he concluded.

Farrow agreed, and launched into a personal story about his adoptive brother.

"It resonates so much for me on a personal level because I grew up with a black brother and people talk about this term 'black motheritis,'" he said.

"My white mother had black motheritis. I heard the speech so many times. My brother was a big black guy and he’d run in the supermarket as a young teen. She’d say 'You can’t do that.' He had to dress in a different way from me because there were all these fears about maybe violence against him if he went across the street in a hoodie or looking a certain way."

Ronan's mention of the hoodie was likely an allusion to Trayvon Martin, who is often held up by members of the media as a symbol of racially motivated bias and violence. The allusion echoed the sentiments of many who've compared Michael Brown's death to that of Martin's.

Brown was killed by a police officer on Saturday in Ferguson, Missouri, after an alleged altercation. The suburban community rioted in the wake of his death, and both local police and the FBI have launched a formal investigation into the case.
